Suicide in Rural America by the Numbers

Between 2001 and 2015, more than 540,000 Americans died from suicide. Suicide now ranks as the 10th leading cause of death in the United States according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Although the majority of deaths from suicide occur in urban areas, rates of suicide for rural populations, who face significant barriers to accessing mental health services, have remained higher over the past decade and are increasing faster than rates in large, medium and small metropolitan counties. The following graphic highlights trends in suicide for rural counties in the United States.
