USC Launches Online Doctor of Social Work Degree Program

The University of Southern California is pleased to introduce its new online Doctor of Social Work (DSW) program. The first of its kind, the DSW@USC is designed to prepare scholar-practitioners to harness innovative solutions to solve real-world problems.
This groundbreaking online advanced degree program is designed for working professionals who are striving to become transformational leaders and make a greater impact in their careers. Graduates of the program will be positioned to advance their careers and join the greater public discourse about creating a stronger, fairer society. They will be positioned to lead high-level conversations and formulate solutions for big issues such as gun violence, foster care and homelessness.
“By addressing significant societal issues through social work’s science and knowledge base, we will prepare social workers who can offer pathways for social and economic progress,” said Marilyn Flynn, dean of the USC School of Social Work.
The DSW@USC curriculum focuses on finding solutions to the Grand Challenges for Social Work, an initiative led by the American Academy of Social Work and Social Welfare. Each challenge is tied to issues — social justice, family and child welfare, and concerns for our social fabric — that drive social workers every day. Students meet these challenges head on with coursework, residencies and a capstone.
During the capstone experience, students in the DSW program will formulate a detailed plan, including a budget that outlines a viable solution to one of the 12 Grand Challenges. This places DSW@USC students in a unique spot to lead the efforts to alleviate some of the greatest challenges facing social work and humanity today. Students will pitch their big ideas to a panel of experts made up of thought leaders, faculty members and venture capitalists.
Consisting of 42 units of coursework that can be completed fully online on a part-time basis in 18 months, the DSW@USC educates students on the skills that will transform them into leaders in the field of social work. In particular, the curriculum will focus on organizational leadership, leading public discourse, innovation and change, technological fluency, and data-driven decision-making.
DSW@USC is now accepting applications for the fall 2016 cohort. If you are interested in learning more about the program, the curriculum or admission requirements, you can reach out to an admissions counselor via email or at 1-877-700-4679.
